Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Directs OED’s small business development efforts and work with businesses county-wide to structure financing and/or incentive packages to facilitate their expansion or relocation to Jacksonville. Since 2001 have assisted over 105 projects creating 16,850 new jobs resulting in private capital investment totaling $1,425,000,000.

Prior to joining the Mayor’s economic development staff served on the staff of the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission, Deputy Director of the Jacksonville Downtown Development Authority and Program Director, The Jacksonville Economic Development Company, Inc. serving as Director of the City of Jacksonville’s Small Business Loan Programs utilizing SBA 7(a), 502, 503 and 504, developed and administered U.S. HUD CDBG Small Business Loan Programs.

Relocated to Jacksonville in 1978 to become Vice-President and General Manager of Gaynon Iron Works, a truck equipment manufacturing company. Served in that capacity for two years before joining the City of Jacksonville and directing the City’s Small Business Financing Programs.

Mark Sizemore is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. As an Adjunct Professor, Mark has learned how to communication and convey complex information in easily understood formats. Jared Bailey

Jared Bailey is a multi-talented marketing specialist and entrepreneur as well as a Florida native. He specializes in internet marketing, web development and financial analysis.
During his studies in the MBA program at the University of North Florida Jared worked with the Small Business Development Center to consult with clients regarding their business plans, market research and online marketing presence, among other needs. Upon receiving his MBA, Jared began a consulting and web development business in Jacksonville. Jared’s own experience has enabled him to better assist business owners.
As a Certified Business Analyst with the SBDC, he provides potential and existing business owners with confidential consulting and training in all aspects of business management and growth. He helps business owners develop strategies to increase sales, create jobs and improve profitability.

David Cohen

An award-winning producer, David understands what it takes to actualize a film (and a company!) from all angles. Dr. Steven Williamson

Dr. Williamson is a Professor of Strategic Management in the Coggin College of Business at the University of North Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Memphis State University, a Master of Science degree from the University of Arkansas, and a Doctorate in Business Administration with a major in Management and a minor in Marketing from Memphis State University. Currently, Dr. Williamson's primary teaching assignment is in the MBA program, where he teaches the required Strategic Management and Business Policy seminar and graduate electives in research, consulting, and entrepreneurship. I have been programming for about 30 years now. I am happy to report that it is all worth it. In the last few years I have co-authored the Pro-Android series of books for APress. I have signed up for the
Expert Android Series due in a few months with APress as well. My focus and struggle the last couple of years has been how to carry-on meaningful work. Most of this work has centered around individual

Ovidiu Dimulescu

Ovidiu Dimulescu is a Cloud Engineer with Oracle. He is the founder and organizer of local Mobile User Group (JaxMUG.com) . Ovidiu is very active in the local tech community having spoken at user groups, code camps and participated at hackathon events. He and TADA team finished 2nd last year at Jacksonville Startup Weekend.
